Steconfer, in collaboration with Sisk, has begun reinstating the 42 km Foynes to Limerick Rail Freight line in Ireland, commissioned by Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail). The project involves replacing old tracks with new concrete sleepers and continuous welded rails.
Track laying started near Askeaton and is expected to finish in ten months. This project involves the comprehensive renewal of the permanent way on the railway line extending from Shannon Foynes Port to Limerick. The primary goal is to restore the line from Limerick Station at the Limerick Check Cabin (0 milepost) to Foynes Port (26 ¾ milepost).
The line is expected to be operational by December 2025, with freight services starting in early 2026. Funded by the Irish Department of Transport and the National Transport Authority, this project reestablishes a vital rail link.
Steconfer is proud to contribute to this initiative, enhancing sustainable freight transport in the mid-west region and demonstrating our commitment to excellence and innovation in railway construction.
The project includes:
- 13 controlled level crossings
- 50 uncontrolled level crossings
- Installation of 10 breather switches
- Construction of 42,670 linear meters of railway ballast track
